Body under threat: Body in History, Psychology and Law.

Call for Papers:

Organizers: Faculty of History, University of Gdańsk, Faculty of Law, University of Gdańsk, Memling Research Center at University of Gdańsk and Faculty of Humanities of the Jan Kochanowski University, Kielce.

23-24 November 2022, Gdańsk, Poland

For centuries the human body has been under threat from wars, diseases and hunger. These threats have not been the only ones. The sinful body has been subjected to numerous processes, such as starvation and flogging.

The threats and atrocities are not the only aspects of body as presented or depicted in the history. Connected with the soul, perceived as beautiful, it found acceptance.

The conference’s theme will be the body in history, psychology and law. The leading question is about the body at risk. However, we emphasize that other aspects are also of interest to us, such as:

  • the body in history, the perception and threats to the body through the ages
  • tormented versus glorified body
  • beauty standards
  • political and religious systems against the body
  • does psychology support the body
  • body and mind, together or separate
  • the law and the body in historical terms
  • the history of the protection of the body by law
  • whether the law protects the body
